Goodwill Industries’ longtime thrift shop and donation drop-off in Yorkville won’t be closing permanently this Sunday, as originally planned. Upper East Site has learned the UES store will remain open as the non-profit negotiates with their landlord to stay at their longtime location on Second Avenue, between East 88th and 89th Street.
Earlier this month, Upper East Site was first to report that the Goodwill Store would be shutting down operations on Sunday, February 5th, after 24 years serving the neighborhood.

At the time, the non-profit said that it was looking for another location in the neighborhood with reasonable rent because its lease on the two-story Upper East Side building was expiring at the end February.

“We are excited to keep open the doors of our 1704 2nd Ave Goodwill store,” said Jose Medellin, Director of Communications for Goodwill Industries of New York and New Jersey, “We are working with our landlord to stay at this Upper East Side location.”

Longtime Yorkville residents might remember that prior to becoming the Goodwill Store, the space served as the home to the Stuyvesant Square thrift shop.

Goodwill’s other UES store, located at 1114 First Avenue, at the corner of East 61st Street, also remains open to shoppers and donors.
Both locations are open 11:00 am to 7:00 pm seven days a week.

With so many thrift shops that have closed since Covid, I’m glad Goodwill will still be there. In this economy, many people have things to donate (cleaning out closets) and many people are looking to buy nice things at inexpensive prices. I hope they continue to stay open.
