MANHATTAN – A 19-year-old man riding an electric unicycle is lucky to be alive— taken to the hospital after being struck by a yellow taxi this afternoon on the Upper East Side that just kept going, in what police are investigating as a hit and run.
The unnerving scene unfolded around 1:50 Wednesday afternoon on Madison Avenue just south of East 86th Street– in front of The Westside clothing store.
Witnesses say the taxi hit the teen on the electric unicycle in traffic, sending him flying through the air and landing on the pavement. The taxi, witnesses tell Upper East Site never stopped and just kept driving north.
The victim was already in the ambulance when Upper East Site arrived on scene— witnesses told us the young man had an apparent arm injury— and definitely needed medical attention after being struck.
Officials say the 19-year-old hit-and-run victim was taken by ambulance to Lenox Hill Hospital for treatment, but couldn’t speak to the unicyclists condition.
Surveillance video from shops along Madison Avenue may hold the key to tracking down the potential hit and run driver— however, police admitted they had not yet collected video of the collision or spoken to witnesses at the scene.
The section of Madison Avenue where the hit and run occurred has lanes closed to traffic for construction— it’s not clear if the bottleneck played a role in the collision.
