MANHATTAN – Stunning video shot during the height of Monday night’s thunderstorms shows a stunning visual phenomena as a bolt of lightning shoots sideways then branches out horizontally through the skies like a tree above the Upper East Side.

While we’re used to seeing typical lightning start in the clouds and form a column of electricity touching the ground, so-called ‘spider lightning’ travels cloud-to-cloud.
In this case, the spider lighting puts on a dazzling display that was caught on camera just before 11:00 pm last night by an Upper East Sider standing on an apartment balcony high above Second Avenue in Yorkville.
