MANHATTAN – A deranged man with a knife slashed a 62-year-old woman this week in a random attack inside the East 53rd Street-Lexington Avenue subway station in Midtown.
Investigators say the woman was standing on an escalator inside the subway station at around 1:45pm Wednesday afternoon when a man came up to her out of nowhere with a knife and used the blade to slice into her leg.

Police said the attack on the 62 year old was random and that the victim did not do anything to provoke her attacker— even unintentionally.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene and the suspect got away. Investigators say he fled onto a northbound (6) train whose next stop would be the 59th and Lexington Avenue on the Upper East Side.
Surveillance videos released by the NYPD on Thursday shows the suspected slasher inside the East 53rd Street-Lexington Avenue subway station— in two different locations.
The first clip shows the suspect laying on the floor inside the subway station when something catches his attention— he turns his head and gazes to his left, eyes focused. In the second video, the suspect stands by a stair case and escalator to the downtown (6) trains.

While is crime are down overall this year the subways, according to NYPD CompStat data, the MTA says ridership is also low— still hovering at roughly half it was on a pre-pandemic weekday in 2019— a slew of random attacks this year has straphangers feeling like danger could be around the corner.
