Another longtime Upper East Side grocery store is set to close permanently in the coming weeks. Upper East Site has learned the East Side Health Food store is going out of business and all merchandise is now 30% off.

Located at 1498 Third Avenue, between East 84th and 85th Streets, for the last two decades, the small, but beloved market with a built-in organic juice and smoothie bar will end its run serving health conscious Upper East Side residents on Easter Sunday, April 9th.

Everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to nuts and seeds — even peanut butter ground right in the Upper East Side store — gluten free foods and nutritional supplements kept neighbors coming back over the years.

Long before Sweetgreen opened a restaurant next door or the Whole Foods market opened a few blocks north on Third Avenue at the corner of East 87th Street, the mom and pop health food shop was there to serve Upper East Side residents. According to an employee, the time was just right for the store’s owners, an older couple, to retire.
East Side Health Food is just the latest Upper East Side organic grocery store to shut down, stripping the neighborhood of its independent retailers and local charm.

Late last year, A Matter of Health’s store located on First Avenue and East 77th Street closed permanently — the First Avenue and East 72nd Street location remains open.

As East Side Health Food says goodbye, there will likely more deep discounts to be had for customers, as the store works to clear out its remaining inventory. Be sure to stop by and say goodbye.

Come April 10th, East Side Health Food’s loyal customers still have options. In addition to A Matter of Health’s store, there’s another organic market not far away in Yorkville. Food for Health is located at 1653 Third Avenue, between East 92nd and 93rd Streets, and offers a similar product selection.
