A delightful boutique bakery has arrived on the Upper East Side. Owned and operated by women, Butterly Bakeshop is expanding beyond its flagship Brooklyn location to bring its irresistible confections to 341 East 78th Street, between First and Second Avenues.

From custom cakes to butter pecan cookies and banana pudding, Butterly has what it takes to satisfy your sweet tooth, and it all begins with one simple household ingredient whose duality brings a creamy richness to both sweet and savory dishes: butter.

For owner and professionally trained pastry chef Kanupriya Kesari, the dairy product played a significant role in creating Butterly Bakeshop — besides being part of the name.

Born and raised in India, Kesari often incorporated butter from the country’s most famous dairy brand, Amul, into her baked goods. Butterly Bakeshop even gets its name from Amul’s catchy slogan, ‘Utterly, Butterly, Delicious.’

The bakery offers 20 heavenly desserts made with “ingredients you can pronounce and use daily in your kitchen,” Kesari tells Upper East Site.

Art takes many forms, and to Kesari, cake customization is one of them. The pastry chef ran a custom cake business from her home before opening her first Butterly location in 2019. She now provides Butterly customers with meticulously designed cakes for special occasions.

“It is something I love doing, and I love the art aspect of it,” the pastry chef tells us.
In addition to cakes, Butterly Bakeshop serves a variety of cupcakes like chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, and coconut-flavored with passionfruit buttercream.

Menu items include cookies and individual desserts ranging from fudgy brownies to French macarons. Their lush apple pie cheesecake is a fan favorite. There are also a handful of vegan and gluten-free options to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Kesari said the freshness of each pastry is evident in the first bite, “We make things from scratch and with a lot of love.”

Such devotion transpires into the bakery’s physical design. Kesari wanted to create an atmosphere symbolic of serenity and hospitality, explaining the shades of blue and pastel yellow occupying the walls and outdoor awning. Butterly also sports an Instagram-worthy neon pink sign that says, “You’re my Butter half!”.

Similarly, Butterly’s predominately women-led staff is intentional. “I wanted to make sure to provide an equal platform for women and give them a chance to succeed. I wanted to give women an equal opportunity to work in a career like ours,” Kesari explained.

Butterly Bakeshop will host their grand opening on Saturday, May 20th, and Sunday, May 21st, from noon to 7:00 pm each day.
